Accelerated urban growth brings in many problems. Transportation is one such area where the problem is manifested acutely. Accelerated urban growth demands increased mobility, in many cases far in excess of the capacities of existing facilities. If the transportation system continuously lags behind to accommodate the requirements of urban growth, the basic purpose for which the urban areas are established will suffer resulting in slowing down of the national development.- Materials and Equipment in Traffic Engineering
